Obstacle Pole

The object of this event is to run up a cantilevered pole, cut a disk off the end with a chainsaw, and return to the starting point in the shortest time possible. Contestants begin with one hand touching the raised end of the pole and with the chainsaw off and lying on the ground. Contestants must not be touching the saw. On hearing, "Go", the contestant will pick up the chainsaw and run up the pole, making sure that one foot touches completely below (not touching) the red line near the bottom of the pole. The contestant will continue up the pole and may not start the saw until one foot has completely crossed (not touching) the red line near the top of the pole. Failure to comply with any of these rules results in disqualification. If the contestant falls off the pole before starting the saw, he or she will be allowed one (1) opportunity to return to the beginning and start again with the time still running. Contestants will cut from both sides of the designated log resulting in a disk no larger than two (2) inches in thickness. If the disk is greater than 2 inches, the contestant is disqualified. Only the bottom side of the saw may be used to make the two cuts from both sides of the log. If the contestant falls off the pole while sawing or falls off after the cut has been made, he or she is automatically disqualified. After making the cut, the contestant must shut off the saw before any part of the body crosses the red line near the top of the pole. They then continue down the pole and must completely cross (not touch) with at least one foot, the red line at the bottom of the pole. Failure to comply with these rules will result in disqualification. Time stops when the contestant touches the raised end of the pole with the saw in hand. Contestants must use the saws provided by the host school. Mechanical failure of the saw (as determined by the judge) will result in the contestant being given a second attempt, but operator error or abuse of the saw (as determined by the judge) may result in a disqualification. Abuse of the saw in any way will result in disqualification. Spiked footwear and long pants are required. Chaps, eye and hearing protection are required.
